Baby Driver is a 2017 action crime film written and directed by Edgar Wright and starring Ansel Elgort, Eliza Gonzalez, Kevin Spacey, John Hamm, Lily James, Jamie Foxx and Jon Bernthal. The story is of a young getaway driver named Baby who uses his music to help his crime boss and the boss’s assistants to help in a heist, that could wrong.

Being a fan of action crime movies like Drive and The French Connection and seeing the trailer and hearing all the good reviews, I had to see this film. To me, this one wasn’t as good as all the hype it has gotten. It was not any of the stars’ best acting. The soundtrack and car chase scenes were the best things about this film in my opinion.

I did like that the film does go into detail about what happened to Baby’s parents and the reason he wears earbuds all the time is from tinnitus. Ansel Elgort who played Baby only did good when he was driving, he is not a very good actor in my opinion, just good looking and almost always plays that kind of role. Although in this film, he played both the young “cute” guy and one of the criminals, a completely different role than the one he is most known for in The Fault in Our Stars.

Kevin Spacey does a good, not great job as the crime boss, which he is good at playing the man who does bad things and is super sly and secretive, which he plays very often, but this is not his best.

Jon Hamm did terribly, but maybe it’s just his character, he isn’t fit to play the handsome party animal. He is a great actor, but he shot himself in the foot taking on this role.

Lily James who played Debora the diner waitress Baby falls in love with, was boring and didn’t talk a lot. She played the cute, lonely, naive girl again.

Overall this film had a good story, great soundtrack, fair to bad acting and was incessantly violent. If there would have been less violence and different actors, besides Spacey, this would have been a much better movie. 18+ 3/5
