The Big Sick is a 2017 romantic comedy film directed by Michael Showalter. It stars Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano, Adeel Akhtar and Anupam Kher. The film was written by Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani and is loosely based on the real life romance between the two. It tells the story of an interracial couple who are forced to deal with cultural differences after Emily falls ill.
This film is not only funny at times, but also heartwarming and heartbreaking at times as well. Nanjiani does a great job at not only being funny, but also being sweet, dumb and a bit of a jerk too. Kazan does pretty good as Emily, but not great. She still, like in most movies she’s in, comes out as a bit too sweet and innocent and a bit naive. Ray Romano and Holly Hunter portray her parents excellently, especially Hunter. The people who portrayed Kumail’s family, did good, most of them, but to me, his dad was the best of them.
This film shows that sometimes you have to fight for what and/or who you want and need. It also shows that love has no color and when you fall in love with someone, you love them for who they are. This is a film that will not only make you laugh, but will also warm your heart, after crying. The perfect date movie. 17+ 4/5
