Velvet Buzzsaw is a 2019 satirical horror thriller film written and directed by Dan Gilroy. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Toni Collette, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge, Natalia Dyer, Daveed Diggs, Billy Magnussen, John Malkovich and Zendaya. The film is about paintings by unknown artist being discovered and afterwards, a supernatural force seeks revenge on people that have allowed greed to get in the way of their art.
This film, that is considered a horror thriller, is more bizarre than it is scary. It has the darkness that Jake Gyllenhaal films have had before. It also has the dark feel of other Dan Gilroy film Nightcrawler. Gyllenhaal is great as usual in the lead role of Morf Vandewalt.
The story of artwork done by an artist that suffered a troubled and abusive childhood that resulted in the murder of his father and the artist’s growing mental illness portrayed in his paintings, is both sad and disturbing. When a character in the film comes in contact with any of the paintings, unfortunate things happen to them. The paintings are obviously cursed.
Some of the events in this film are so weird, they’re dumb. A painting that can kill anyone that comes in contact with it, that make it and a gallery worker going missing and are never found again, paint that can burn a person to death, these are just a few examples of occurrences being so outlandish, that they’re stupid. Jake has been in other weird films too, Donnie Darko, Nocturnal Animals, Life and Okja, but this is probably the most bizarre.
The acting is outstanding, but some of the effects are pretty bad. The story is too strange for the majority of the film, that it’s very confusing, you find yourself scratching your head and saying, “What the heck!?” Much of this movie doesn’t make any sense and being a Jake Gyllenhaal fan (as well as some of the other stars), I wanted to like this more, but it fell flat. I am disappointed that I had wasted very close to two hours watching this, just hoping it got better. Don’t waste your time with this one. 18+ 2/5
